Opinions

New magazine usually contian a text section and opinion page where their readers give thier views and opinions of the latest events in the magazine or social calender. I would like to include a smaller version of this page in my three page spread to add enhancement to the page.
Will be a small box that contains texts tha i can contrast with the tweets from the celebrities. This shows that i have covered all sections of a magazine and not just the views of celebrities as the views may vary between non-celebs.
To include this it would also fit in with the casual language used by new magazine, as the texts will have been sent in by the readers they will be worded the exact same way which means that some will be in text slang wear as others may be typed out correctly depending on the quote etc.

Costumes

Recreating outfits that could have been worn to the Royal wedding is slightly more difficult, although i cant recreate them match for match i can attempt to create ones that are just as elegent and in keeping with the styles that the guests wore.
Long skirts and dresses are key to the costumes with blazers being an optional attire to the outfits. The outfits need to be quite simple as this is what the majority of the guests achieved. Jewllery was also kept to a minimum however the majority of the guests opted to wear fascinators and hats that showed off their personaltiy slightly better than their outifts.

(photo's to be inlcuded)

Make up

Due to the production peice being set in a trashy gossip magazine make up is important however, the event means that over the top make up is not right in the photo shoot.
Make up like this can not be used for the photo shoot as although it may be in keeping with magazine and some of the other styles of articles it does not add credibilty to the event.

(photo off over done make up on my model )

This style of make up is however acceptable as it its understaed but clearly there, it means that the guests look credible to be going to a wedding and be part of the Royal Wedding.

(Include 2 photos of my models faces )

I used picture from the real event to get an estimate of the correct amount of make up to use and blended this with the reality of the magazine and the types of guests that are going to show in their article.

From the top three photo's you can see that nude colours are key to the make up and the understated look is best.

Photo's

The staging for my photo's will be an in action stance, as the idea is that i have taken the photo's as the guests are making their way to or in the church. This therefore means that the setting needs to be outside as this gives them credibility to be taken as if they was on the day.
This means that the photo's need to be full length, not nessesarily showing off the whole of the front of the body but enough to show the outift they are wearing. This allows me to include the "rate" or "slate" object of the peice.
The ratio of male to femal photo's will be 90% female 10% male. This is due to the magazine being of a gossip standard and its targetted audience are females. This means that it needs to be aimed at them and being able to form their own opinions on other womens outfits does this.  Even though the magazine forms its own opinion on the outfits it appeals to the audience to be able to slate and rate them themselves, which is easier to do on females outfits rather than males.

The ratio of best and worst dressed across the page will be 70% best and 30% worst. After analysing other magazines ratios this is roughly the same, more attention is paid to the better dressed stars rather the worst dressed ones. This means that when staging my photo shoot i will need to create outfits that are not only fitting with the elegant theme but also ones that can be slated for not being appropraite as such.

New or Heat

After Anaylysing both magazines i have choosen to use New magazine as the basis of my production peice. This is due to the magazine containing more of the styles needed to support my own coursework. New magazine uses quotes, tweets, facts and extra information to each of its production peices and this will work well with my own piece, as it means that i can include extra wedding informtion instead of having the basic layout. New magazine is also one of the only magazines that use twitter to actually create a story, this allows me to include the social network site in my production which allows me to show the other side of the opinions. Heat magazine is simply to basic to use for my production as it sticks to set layouts and this wouldnt work well with my idea. By choosing to use New i can formally follow the magazines designs and it will look proffesional and real.

Fact versus Fiction

Using quotes from sites such as twitter indicates the use of facts. This is due to the site being a social network so the majority of people can see whats been said already, its easily obtained and readily available. Its also a primary source of information as it has been said straight from the celebrities mouths to thier twitte accounts.
This provides the article with truth and a basis for the rest of the evidence.

Another use of evidentual facts is pictures, by including these in the production pieces its showing the real thing in action. Photographic evidence can not be denyed therefore it provides factual back up to their story.

However there are fictional tendanceys to these articles- the article itself can be seen as fictional because its not an interveiw directly from the people's mouths. Therefore it could be completely made up and telling a fictional story, even though they may have tweets and photos, sometimes the story can say a different side to things that are not nessasarily shown in the photo's.
Another fictional use in the magazines is the idea of close sources to the celebrities. Most magazines include a quote or a statement that "supposidly" backs up their point, however they claim it to be from a close freind of the star, this therefore means that there is no factual evidnece and majority of the time this tends to be fiction, in order to give the story some justifaction or back up.

Language

New Magazine
  • Slang words often used through out the article and headlines
  • Not completely formal - the article flows with the main formats off english however doesnt stick to these.
  • Quotes add to the enhancment
  • Languge is a more continuas prose- longer sentances as apposed to shorter ones.
  • Over exaggeration of certain words and phrases
  • Language is in keeping with the readers, doesnt include words that nobody will understand - keeps it simple.
Heat Magazine

  • Formal Language, tries to tell more of a story and document things rather than talk gossip.
  • Inofrmation is more story like - not quotes to add enhancment.
  • Shorter statments to add thier justification
  • aims to catch the audiance not bore them, keeps all the text in one place and not jotted around the page.
Similarities
Both have a story artickle not interviews, therfore their language is in continuas prose and written like a story, not broken up like how a person speaks.
The language is written to grab you and have a gosip with you, instead of trying to sell you something they are simply providing you with the information to form your own opinions. The gossip langugae ties in with the idea of "trashy magazine " style langugae,
The article is only there to enhance the pictures and the healine, its there to explain the story but only briefly and with enough pace that you dont feel pressure into reading it.

Heat magazine double page spread

Heat Magazine

Large photo taking up one whole page, becomes clear who the article is about. The heading takes up another half of the next page adding reffernece to the large photo, however both items take up so much space that less text is left to put on the page.
An enhancement for the story is placed on the bottom of the first page overtaking a small section of the photo.

(large photo of the double page spread )

The colour scheme is in keeping with the magazine, using reds and yellows shows that its still Heat magazine. If usuing this idea with my production piece i would be using these colours for my piece as its part of the design of the magazine and therefor another colour would not suit the style.

Due to the large photo on the page there is less text to analyse however a small box split into two shows off opinions of the people involved. If i was to use this in my production piece i could use it too show of the opinions of the fashion critiques or the opinions of the readers on the day.

Less quotes on the page doesnt add enhancement to thier story, their evidence is based upon the limited photo's and the article iteself to justify their claims. The article text is minimal however the "story" is continuas and doesnt split across the page.

The first line of this article however is in pink- complete contrast to the rest of the page and the colour scheme they have used. It doesnt fit into the page and looks like it shouldnt be there at all. The same pink colour is used to higlight the word REALLY mide article which again makes the word stand out but not the reason it is aimed at.

(include two picture of the highlighted pink words and sentance )

Positive to this magazine is that it shows more sides to hte story, doesnt just include the gossip section it trys to show off the different reasons behind the event and give a split opinion. This could work for my production piece as it can show that the views of the country were split however they all vary.

New Double Page Spread

New Magazine

The page contains a combination of five different pictures - 1 large and 4 small, the pictures are from different days and give small insights into the story and the event that is being documented. If i was to follow this code in my production piece then my photos need to vary from different times across the day and show the different styles the day contained.

(photo of whole double page spread here )

Each photo on the page contains a box containing a brief discription about where and when it was taken and who it contains. Linking this to my production piece i can use this type of format to describe the outfits of the guests and also include a similiar style box containing the opinions of the fashion critiques. This way the production piece is following the style of new magazine.
This magazine also uses twitter tweets to add evidence and support to their article, instead of just re typing the tweet onto the page or including in the written article they have cropped the actuall tweet from the site. This not only shows that its a true tweet but it makes the production peice look better researched and evidentual.

(photo of twitter tweet here )

The large photo takes up the majority of the right hand side of the page, leaving less room for the article but also indicating quite clearly who the production is about. In relation to my piece i can use a larger photo with quotes to show the reader that the piece is about the royal wedding.

The colour scheme is in keeping with the photo's, Rhianna is wearing a bright pink dress and therefore the theme to the page is the same shade of hot pink. This ties together all the extra photos and the additional peices of information. If i was following this way of design it would involve me picking a colour theme in keeping with the royal wedding and ensuring that its stuck to with all the extra box's and side storys.

(large photo of the picture and the colour scheme )

The article is continuous providing an explanation of the events and not telling a story. Speaks of the main features and then brings together all the photo's so each piece of evidence is relevent to the page.
Headline is straight to the point, refers to the main photo of the page- this hooks the reader as they can see it being backed up as soon as they have read it.
As the article is trying to show Rhianna in a bad light its including all the bad issue's from her past linking them together with all the bad behaviour she has been doing. This means that the production is trying ti justify its story with past evidence using it to support their new production.

Royal Wedding Guests

The angle of the majority of these photo's is shot from the front. Showin the full length of the celebrity/guests.
Each outfit is elegent an tends to be floor lengh.

When taking the photos for m media production i will stick to these main criteria;
1. Full lenght images, not posed for as the guests are not there for the press but to go into the church.
2. The style of the outfits are classy so when replicating these pictures i will need to find oufits that are just as elegent and posh looking. Not nessearilly exactly the same but within in the same style.
3. The photos are from a short distance therefore they are not takend directly, shouldnt matter if they are "messy" as its about catching the image.

Front Covers

Above is an average layout for a typical front cover of any magazine.  The majority of the pages is based around information to draw in the reader. Tag lines and information is key to showing what they have to expect if they buy the magazine.
These quotes and information about the stories within the magazine, are the exiting line to draw in readers. The main story is based around the main image of the page. Doesnt have to be one photo, can be two or three based around the same event.

In relation to my production piece this is the type of layout to use. The basic headlines are there and they fit in with the design of the Gossip mags im producing for.

Heat Magazine

There is a clear pattern in the way Heat magazine lays our there front pages on their magazines. Their Masterhead is always in the same place on each front cover produced, however its not always fully visable with photos overlapping on some of the letters. The use of white font is clear to fit in with the colour scheme of the magazine. Above the Masterhead is the smaller stories of the magazine usually with a coloured background to make it stand out slightly less than the rest of the page.
Photos are usally not possed for and ones that have been taken out in public so are in action shots, of the celebrity/ celebrities out in public. If the photo is posed for their is a theme and and the pose is model style, with over sized font sometimes bigger than the masterhead. More than one story per page, witht the smaller stories being based around the outside of the page.

Closer Magazine

The masterhead for this magazine is in the same place on every front cover, as with heat magazine the letters are not always visible completley and the magazines headline can take over it. Main Headlines are placed in birght box's not allowing them to blend into the rest of the page and to stand out. The colour of the page is predominatly pink background with orange and yellow being their choosen choice of colour for the text.
Like heat magazine, the smaller stories of the magazine are placed along the top of the page.
More than one image per story is applied to the main item of the front cover.

New Magazine

Masterhead in the same position on every front cover of the page. Headlines in bold box's that stand out on the page. Choice of font colour is black majority of the time. Fewer photo's on this magazine with there being a photo in every top right hand corner of the pages. Price is largely displayed in the top left hand corner of the pages. In this magazine the smaller stories are placed on the bottom of the screen predominatly.

Similarities of the three magazines
  • Masterhead is in the same place on all three of the magazines.
  • Masterhead can be covered by items on the page.
  • Photo's are large and borken up by headlines
  • Headlines are in large box's to stand out
  • Smaller stories have different coloured backgrounds
Differences of the three magazines
  •  New magazine shows the price of the item laregly in the left hand corner of the page
  • Heat magazine is slighly more simpler than the other two covers
  • New and Closer is bolder in colour to stand out compared to heat magazine
  • Less text on the heat magazine

Polls and Statistics

Polls
 The polls in my production piece will be in addition to the Best and Worst dressed layout. They will be placed randomly around the page to add in extra information and opinions to the choosen subject. These poll include things such as;
  • Was she a Princess ?
  • Did you like the Wedding dress ?
  • Will it last ?
  • Do they suit each other ?
  • Did it live up to expectations ?
  • Should they be the next King and Queen ?
Statistics
Like the poll answeres these will be placed around the double spread to add to the highlights of the day, except these will be more related to what the magazine viewers are more interested in. These may include things such as;
  • How much hair spray was used on the day
  • How much everyones outfits cost combined
  • How many glasses of champaigne were drunk
  • How many hotel rooms were booked
  • How many alarms were set throughout the day
  • How many taxi's and private cars were hired
If i want to link it to the best dressed and the worst dressed style on the page i could relate statistics and polls to the outfits that have been worn. This might include things such as which designer was favoured and which designer got it very wrong.

Heat Magazine

 Heat Magazine

This magazine uses the term "Best Dressed"
Each photo is taken at seperate events from accross the week, and their is a range or casual and smart outfits. Set rules have been applied to the page that should be followed;
  • Speech bubble explaining every outfit and celebritiy
  • The photo's are full length shots either stationary or in action
  • Each photo is taken from the front of the celebrity, no back shots.
From this i can also say that when i do my photo shot, any casual shots of celebirites i may or may not include tend to inlclude sun glasses. Shots of smart dresses tend to have their hands on thier hips and posing directly at the camera. Other shots seem to be in action with the subject walking to wearever they need to be.
The speech bubble that are placed on each outdfit stand out on a full white background making it hard for them to be ignore and blend in.
The colour theme is reds and whites, nothing to dull and the red highlights the magazines primary choice of colour.

In comparision their worst dressed section is fairly similar with the photo's remaining to be shot in the same way and the lay out to be similar. However the colour scheme is fairly different, a dark blue is used instead of the red to indicate that the difference between good and bad.

Celebrity Twitter Quotes

Twitter is the new social network most popular amongst the celebrity world. They use this a base to voice their personal opinions, and keep in contact with their fans.

Magazines now use twitter quotes to improve and add to their articles, its common to see a choosen number of celebritites views on events of the page. "New" magazine uses twitter alot in their magazine, for instance they have twitter quotes from choosen celebrities along the bottom of a page. This allows them to use the popular site to their advantage and gain quotes from celebritites without actually interveiwing them in person.

For my production piece i can use this idea to portray the veiws of the worlds "Royal Celebrities" on the events of the wedding. Just like Now magazine i can place them along the bottom of my double page spread and reference them to the wedding day.

Not all quotes that i use will be praising the day, and in relation to my research i can use this form of design to create an the view of  an American and what they really think of the Royal Wedding back home and away from all the press drama.

The above tweets are in relation to the royal wedding.
It would be these types of tweets that i would use at the bottom of my production piece as they vary in humour and opinion. Also in nationality as two of the above are Amercian and their views on the Royal Wedding differ.

Even the house they went to for the few hours of the day to rest joined in on the twitter campaigne to keep its followers informed of the events. A way of people knowing what the couple were up to without it being pre-told. They acted as if they was the official informer of the Royal Wedding from the Royal Family themselves.
